VOLUNTEER
Volunteers Needed!
As our church family has returned to in-person gatherings, there are things we would like to add back to our church’s services and activities, but can only happen if we have volunteers. To pique your interest, we’ve provided brief summaries of the volunteer areas where we need your help. Please prayerfully consider serving Benson Memorial in one or more volunteer areas so our church can fulfill its potential.
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild prepares the altar for worship services each week by making sure correct paraments are in use and that candle inserts are ready. We assist with the ordering of altar flowers and delivering flowers to shut-ins or members who need a smile. Few volunteer jobs are as enjoyable as sharing a bit of happiness to brighten someone’s day. If you are interested in serving in the Altar Guild, please contact Louise Humphrey at (919) 518-1825.
Audio-Visual (AV)
Want to learn to operate video cameras and be on the AV team at Benson Memorial UMC? We need a few volunteers who are willing to be trained to operate video streaming equipment for the 11:00 AM service. Chris Lehman volunteered to serve in this position several months ago, but now we need a few more volunteers to operate the equipment so that Chris can have an occasional weekend off. If you are interested in serving on the AV team, please contact P.D. Hill at pdrahill@gmail.com.
Campus Cleanup
Campus Cleanup - Church Grounds Maintenance
Monthly on one Saturday, 9:00 AM to noon
Let's all pitch in to help with our campus cleanup! These are once-a-month work sessions that take place on a Saturday from 9:00 AM to noon. Work involves light maintenance of the church grounds and interior of buildings, such as weeding, leaf blowing, pressure washing, trimming, and touch-up tasks inside buildings.
If you are interested in serving on the Campus Cleanup team, please contact Jerry Crenshaw at jerrychome@gmail.com.
Audio-Visual (AV)
Communion falls on the first Sunday of the month, and we are always on the lookout for people to serve the elements in the worship services. We need two volunteers to serve at our 8:45 AM service, and four to serve at the 11:00 a.m. service. We will prepare you in advance so you will understand all the duties of this position. We ask that servers wear masks and sanitize hands. If you are interested in serving as a Communion Server, please contact Debbie Santelli at debsantelli@hotmail.com or Linda Dodd at lbdodd6819@gmail.com.
Counters
A crew of Counters are needed serve in pairs for six to eight Sundays a year. Volunteers are required to add up weekly tithes and offerings, and to photocopy checks for our business manager. Counting takes place following the 11:00 AM Sunday worship service, and takes around 30 to 45 minutes to complete. If you are interested in serving as a Counter, please contact Phil Cervi at phil@blalock-paving.org.
Family Fellowship
Family Fellowship is a great way to be involved in the church, meet other church members, share in food preparations and presentations, and eat! We have several functions the committee is responsible for.
Wonderful Wednesday, a weekly potluck dinner, is prepared for by the volunteer team between 4:00 and 7:00 PM. The two– to three-person team sets up the dining space for all Wednesday night attendees. We enjoy the meal with others and clean up after the meal is over. You will still have time to participate in Bible studies and activities.
Adult Fellowship meets on the second Thursday of each month. Just as for Wonderful Wednesday, our team of volunteers makes sure the Fellowship Hall is ready for this group’s luncheon and program. Volunteers are needed from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Coffee Fellowship Sunday takes place on the first Sunday of each month (changing in 2023 to the last Sundays of the month). Volunteers prepare coffee and light breakfast snacks for friendly fellowship between worship services. Volunteers are needed from 8:00 to 11:00 AM.
Churchwide pot-luck luncheons are enjoyed by all church members and visitors four times a year. Our entire volunteer committee comes out in force for these events. Volunteer time is about an hour, depending on your availability.
If you are interested in serving in Family Fellowship, please contact Carol Wright at crwright1004@gmail.com.
Lay Readers
Our lay readers are a fantastic group, and we are always looking for more people who like to read aloud! As a lay reader, during worship services you would read scriptures, lead the responsive reading, announce the opening hymn, and lead the reading of the opening prayer. Don’t worry, it’s not scary, and you will receive a copy of the order of service days in advance to help you prepare. We would welcome your service and addition to our group! If you are interested in serving as a Lay Reader, please contact Charlie Hobgood at charliehobgood@yahoo.com.
Membership Care
Membership Care volunteers serve by caring for our Benson Memorial family when there is a special need. It may mean caring for someone just home from surgery who needs a ride to a doctor’s appointment before they are medically cleared to drive. Or the need may be to care for a family member in hospice by delivering a prepared meal to them. It could also involve sending a card to a someone who’s sick, letting them know we miss them and that they are in our prayers. We would welcome new volunteers! If you are interested in serving in Membership Care, please contact Trisha Allen at trishalongallen@aol.com.
Ushers
Ushering is an important part of our Sunday worship experience, as we are often the first to greet visitors and members, letting them know we are happy they have chosen to be with Benson Memorial on Sunday mornings. We have four usher teams, and each team ushers for a quarter of the year. Ushers may also assist with funerals and special holiday services such as Christmas and Easter. If you are interested in serving as an Usher, please contact Tony Lockerman at tlockerman@att.net or Craig Nichols at craig@blalock-paving.org.
